At the end of the day, it was time to visit the Karnak Shriners of Montreal who had planned tailgate party with lots of hot dogs and hamburgers. Well over 150 attended this event at the Karnak Shrine. During the course of the evening, guests were able to have a look inside the construction site thanks to footage filmed earlier this year. The construction of the new Shriners Hospitals for Children – Canada is progressing well and on budget. They also had the opportunity to meet local patient Maya who is the star of the hospital’s television and billboard awareness campaign. You can support Maya and the Exceptional Care for Kids Campaign by clicking on donate, personal fundraising pages and searching for Maya.
Maya’s story: Mélanie shared that Maya’s leg length discrepancy had been diagnosed in utero and that this is when she had been referred to Shriners Hospitals for Children-Canada. Maya has fibular hememalia, meaning in her case that she is missing all of the fibula bone in one leg. Mélanie had a hard choice to make, either amputate or take a chance on a road yet untraveled along with the orthopedic surgeons of Shriners Hospitals for Children – Canada led by Reggie Hamdy, M.D. Mélanie chose to take a chance and to let Maya make the choice later on in life. So far, Maya has had one leg lengthening procedure and she is expected to have another three or four before she reaches adulthood. Maya can walk, run, play, skip rope on her leg which is braced.
